Taipei, May 30 (CNA) A second-grader who was knifed at an elementary school in Taipei City died of her wounds Saturday, less than a day after she was randomly attacked by an intruder[1].

The 8-year-old girl, who was identified only by her surname Liu, had been in critical[2] condition since she was rushed to Taipei Veterans General Hospital (台北榮民總醫院) early Friday evening.

On Saturday morning, the hospital notified[3] the Liu family that doctors were ceasing[4] their attempts to revive the girl. She was expected to be officially pronounced[5] dead shortly afterwards.

Liu was found bleeding from her neck and unconscious[6] on the floor of a toilet. She was without a heartbeat on arrival at the hospital but doctors managed to restore some vital signs[7] with surgery although she was never out of the woods[8].

The suspect, a 29-year-old man who was identified as Kung Chung-an (龔重安), alerted[9] the police shortly after the attack and was apprehended[10] near the crime scene at Wenhua Elementary School (文化國小).

In the attack that sent shock waves across society, the girl was slashed[11] twice in the throat with a knife, which severed[12] or damaged her trachea[13] and carotid[14] arteries[15], according to the police.

Preliminary[16] questioning[17] by the police indicated that the suspect picked his victim simply because she was alone and out of her classroom.

He allegedly[18] followed her into the toilet, where he grabbed her from behind and cut her throat.

The man, who took time off his work as a courier[19], told the police that he was driven to[20] perpetrate[21] the act by the voices inside his head. The man is an alumnus[22] of the school in Beitou District (北投區), northern Taipei.

On Saturday morning, prosecutors[23] were asking a court judge to detain[24] the suspect to prevent him from fleeing[25].

  1. I feel so painful and uncomfortable when I image the girl's feeling that after she got a such big wound. The little girl must be scared for awhile, hoping someone can save her......
This event shows a serious problem: campus safety may not be done well, so even the suspect intruded school, nobody discovered him.

  2. I am so astonished by this news! I remember this news but I didn't know the truth and the condition was so terrible and objectionable. The little girl was pathetic, but the news also let us notice that the school's security system was so loose. We should be more careful about who enter the school( as there are more and more opened campus) and avoid to let children be alone.

  3. I am so sorry to hear about it. I even cannot image how much painful the little girl can endure. It is a very serious problem for today's society, everyone only think about themselves, never think others' feeling. In addition, campus not always safe at everywhere, so no matter who should be careful anytime.
